A Q&A with The Kite String Tangle
Under the stage name The Kite String Tangle (TKST for short), Brisbane-native Danny Harley has already made quite a splash in the music biz. We’ve only heard a small sample of the singer/producer’s talents, but rest easy, there is plenty more to come. His debut EP entitled Vessel is due out August 8, 2014 and promises to deliver more great music from the young singer-songwriter. Danny took time out before hitting the road to tour his native Australia to answer a few questions for Kick Kick Snare. Read up on his musical influences, what to expect from his upcoming EP and more below.
Kick Kick Snare: What sort of sound can we expect from Vessel?
Danny: These first two tracks (“Given The Chance” and “Arcadia”) are pretty indicative of the EP in terms of merging a more singer-songwriter approach with an electronic producer approach. You can expect more of that but in pushing the limit of what you’ve already heard. I’m kind of trying to play around with a few different sounds to see what feels best before its album time.
KKS: Will you be making it back stateside to perform after the EP’s release?
Danny: Definitely. Nothing locked in as of yet but I’m hopeful for sometime in October or November.
KKS: Who are your major music influences?
Danny: I’m influenced a lot by a lot of singer songwriter-artists such as London Grammar, Bon Iver, BASECAMP, Shy Girls, Rhye, Depford Goth and SOHN to name a few. But I love a lot of instrumental beaty stuff too like Bonobo, Jamie xx and Fourtet.
KKS: How did you get your start in the industry?
Danny: I’ve been playing music since before high school. Doing awful renditions of Green Day and blink-182. I’ve been through many phases since and somehow landed in electronic crooning. Haha.
KKS: You’ve previously worked with Adventure Club on the track “Wonder.” Any chance you might be getting together to produce some more music?
Danny: I enjoyed working on that track but I wouldn’t expect something again for a while. I’m trying to be cautious to not do too many collaborations until I’ve really become familiar with my own sound.
KKS: We’ve heard you cover Lorde’s “Tennis Court.” Are there any other tracks you’d love to add the Kite String touch to?
Danny: I wanted to do a cover of ‘Wrecking Ball’ by Miley Cyrus. Haha. But maybe I’ll wait until the next pop hit to see if I can give it my own spin. Could be a bit of fun.
KKS: Who else would you love to work with in the music biz?
Danny: My all time dream artists to work with would be Bonobo, Jon Hopkins, Moderat or Brian Eno. I just love each of their sound palettes.
KKS: What artists are you listening to?
Danny: I’ve been absolutely rinsing the new Moderat album and London Grammar albums. They’re both flawless.
