[Best Of 2013] Favorite Song: MØ- Glass
A Nordic chill blew through the music industry in 2013 and a shiver of glee has traveled up my spine ever since. From Sweden’s Icona Pop, Postiljonen and Korallreven to Finland’s Shine 2009, Denmark has finally found its own electronic pop voice to shout against the cold winds.
MØ, the Odense born electronic pop singer, has been my artist-to-blast for months now. While I could go on about her music in its entirety, the track that I haven’t been able to shut out is “Glass.” It had me at the laser like darting through dark synths, series of coordinated guitar plucking, and female chanting- pairings I never thought would work.
The track makes me simply happy. It isn’t trying to convince me of anything other than embracing what it is. Perhaps that’s why I like MØ so much. She has her proverbial palms out, arms open to her listeners- a “take it or leave it” je ne sais quoi that makes me want to be her best friend. To have girl time braiding hair and putting studs in our leather vests while confronting our demons over the phone.
“Glass” is a call to the wild. A howl to the impermanence of youth. A reminder, if anything, that MØ is nothing close to the fragility of shattered glass. The sand of time is still sifting through and MØ wants nothing more than to remind us of the time we have left. Listening to this track over and over again, unfortunately, makes my day go by pretty quickly, but at least I’m smiling the whole way.
