Coachella Q&A: KITTENS

It's taking every bit a control to not kick this off with a kittens pun. There are so many good ones so apologies upfront if (when) I go rogue. Now then, KITTENS. Can we first point out the obvious? That being how strikingly beautiful she is. Stunning. Let's quickly time-travel back to my nerdy high school days and imagine if I walked into prom with her. I'd go from a zero to prom king in a nanosecond. I imagine we'd be kicked out shortly thereafter for spiking the punch but we'd already have our crowns so who cares. The best part, KITTENS's talent far outweighs her best Blue Steel pose. Not only has she conquered just about every "Top Female DJ" list, she was named as one of Source Magazine's 25 Women To Watch, and...can you say your mom was friends with legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix? Because she can.

We had the opportunity to host a Q&A with KITTENS leading up to her festival performances Saturday April 14th & 21st where we covered everything from what's in her travel survival bag, which fellow-performers she's most excited to see and lots more! Where were you when you first heard you'll be playing Coachella?

I was sitting at the airport in San Francisco about to fly home after a show and got the email from my agent. My manager told me months before about a thing I would be really excited about if it confirmed but he refused to tell me what it was lol. I immediately knew he was talking about this once I got that email.

When the Coachella lineup was announced, what's the best reaction you received from a fan, friend, or family member?

One of my best friends who was one of the people who really introduced me to a ton of important music and the idea of even djing myself FREAKED out. She lives in New York and was like IM COMING NO MATTER WHAT. She had just proposed to her girlfriend and at their engagement dinner made a toast about how proud she was which was so cute.

Are you a Coachella newbie? If so, what are you most excited or most nervous about? If you're a veteran, what's the one story that encapsulates your most memorable Coachella experience?  

This is my first time playing a real Coachella stage so needless to say, I’m a bit terrified lol. I just want it to go well and hope people who don’t know me yet are into the show. 

What's in your Coachella survival bag and does that bag include any extra special add-ons for your set that we can look forward to? 

I’m the most overprepared beauty product obsessed OCD type so my bag will have anything and everything needed to make sure I look and feel my best all day. Skincare, makeup, bandaids, face masks to deal with dust…the list is going to be extensive for sure.

Describe how you envision the day of your performance to go:

9AM: Wake up feeling and looking like a fresh baby. Have a coffee and bagel while I get ready. Then meditate outside.
11AM: Start to panic a bit as nerves kick in. Eat a proper breakfast so I don’t pass out. Annoy my manager repeatedly until we leave.
1PM: Nervous pee before going on stage! Probably will try to have a quick little zen moment before.
3PM: Performance DONE. I’ll probably want a moment to relax and eat before heading out back into the festival madness.
5PM: Go
7PM: Enjoy
9PM: The
11PM: Music 

If you could have any celebrity front row during your show who would it be?

Probably just one that is a friend who I feel comfortable with and supported by. I wouldn’t want some huge person I look up to staring at me

Out of all of your fellow Coachella artists performing, whose show are you most looking forward to watching?

BEYONCE. I have actually never seen her perform so I’m really excited because that level of performance is unlike anything else. Other than her on Saturday I’m surer hyped to catch Brockhampton, Tyler the Creator, Wizkid, Jorja Smith, and my good good friends/basically family Chromeo:)

What was the last song you listened to on repeat?

Love Is All by The Rapture. It’s an old favorite that I hadn’t heard in years but it came on shuffle the other day and I got really warm nostalgic feels. Think I might end my Coachella set with it actually.

If you could partner with any brand, who would it be and why?

EVIAN. I’m obsessed it’s all I ever want to drink and it just makes me happy lol. Other than that would be super down for a bougie fashion house like YSL and Gucci or MAC Cosmetics.

Post-Coachella, anything exciting on the horizon we should know about and share with the universe?

New music is coming! I’m super excited to put a few things I’ve been working on out. Also I’ll be playing at EDC in Las Vegas along with my residency at Drai’s continuing. I’m just really excited for the rest of this year.
