BAUM: This Body
If you're hip to our weekly Spotify playlist (here), then chances are you're already familiar with BAUM and have her latest single, "This Body," on repeat. Following her recent buzz from Billboard to Live Nation's Ones To Watch, we patiently waited our turn to corner the Los Angeles singer-songwriter long enough. Start by listening to the song, below, then check out our recent Q&A to learn more about your new favorite dark pop anthem.
What was the inspiration for "This Body"?
I wrote "This Body" one morning after being cat called. It was inspired by that experience and everything that experience stood for. The song came out of my anger in that situation and in general with misogyny, particularly objectification and female beauty standards.
How do you think the song is relevant to what's going on recently/lately in the news/world?
I think women right now are doing what we've always done -- saying our truth and remaining strong -- but we are doing so in an organized and more publicized way. I'm very optimistic about everything that's happening and the fact that men are finally being held accountable for their actions. The song is my personal statement about openly loving myself and taking my power back.
What is your favorite thing about this song?
My favorite thing about the song is being able to perform it. I always feel more comfortable on stage once I've sang "This Body." I also feel like it helps establish a connection with people in the room.
Do you have a favorite lyric from this song?
"Every woman grows up with the posters on your wall / In the shadow of your worship of the shadow of a model."
What's next for you?
I'm playing south by southwest and then my EP, "Ungodly," is coming out March 16th!!
