Top of the Week: Do Disturb
Kidswaste - Friends (feat. TRACE)
Definitely feeling a little sluggish this morning as I rub my eyes with two giant fits powered by a sizable amount of pout channeled from my 5-year-old inner-self. I blame my friends. They're too much fun and wore me down this weekend. That said, while I'm apparently trying to out-gloom Los Angeles's weather, I do have an easy remedy in the form of Kidswaste's recently released track called....yep, "Friends," featuring TRACE. It's the equivalent of custom-tailed sheets from Charlotte Thomas, the ones that feature 22-karat gold woven directly into Merino wool fabric backed with silk jacquard and added to 10000 thread-count sheets made from Egyptian cotton. Comfort.
Lucas Nord - Mess It Up
The latest tune from Stockholm artist Lucas Nord, "Mess It Up," is about as relatable as they come. Can I get a quick show of hands here? Has anyone tried that whole "trust yourself" thing he's singing about? I feel like the last time I did I mixed it with alcohol and I ended up "time traveling" into the future. No, I did not say "blacked out." In any case, like God's miracle that is Advil, let "Mess It Up" be your prescription today and in all its gritty, R&B and off-kilter bass filled glory.
Justin Hurwitz - City Of Stars (zacheser's House Party Edit)
Last night, omfg. Personally, I had a bad feeling shortly after Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway began to address the audience. Their flow was off and boy was that reveal the wrong kind of drama! Quick! Segue into zacheser's House Party edit of Justin Hurwitz's "City Of Stars" and bring back that flow we deserve. The kind that's smooth, groove-driven with a danceable 4/4 pattern, and funk sounds that'll have your hands up towards the sky, head in the clouds, and eyes full of stars. No doubt, if I heard this song come into play mid-set at a club, I would be Ryan and Emma during that Observatory scene, but without the need for special effects. I'd be floating IRL.
Rogue + Jaye - Little Relief
Even on the Mondayiest of Mondays, it's impossible to not get a "Little Relief" from Rogue + Jaye's latest release. This collaborative Los Angeles x Nashville duo is the hammock tied between two palm trees, the beer in my hand at my favorite festival as the sun is setting, the smile wrapped around my face that has people taking notice. Looking forward to hearing what their full-length 'Pent Up' LP brings -- scheduled for May 5th!
Caswell - Animal
Okay Monday, one more snooze. Let me listen to Caswell's latest single, "Animal," one more time before I officially face the day. The song's brooding production is masterfully paired with a strong message behind those honeyed vocals -- one that I think has varied interpretations based on the listener. For Caswell, it's about drawing form personal experiences and overcoming them. For others, I imagine it could be letting certain inhibitions out of the cage.
