Splash House Q&A: MK

MK 1 There's cool and there's MK cool. This revered producer, remixer and DJ has been a longtime favorite of mine, someone whose music has been the soundtrack to countless unforgettable moments from Ultra to Coachella to my own private house parties. Leading up to this weekend's Slash House Pool & Music Festival where MK will be performing, we had the opportunity to host a Q&A with him where we discussed everything from what a typical day in the life of looks like, what’s in his travel survival bag, what’s next on the horizon, and more! Check it out:

Thanks for taking the time out to talk with us! First question, and it’s 100% real… Do you sleep? Ha ha, nobody has ever asked me that before. Yes, I sleep, but my best sleep happens when I am traveling. As soon as I get onto the car, train, plane & start moving, I am out.

Your accomplishments are inspiring not only to your fans and music lovers alike, but to young aspiring artists. How do you divide your time to tackle everything on your plate?

Good question, and I don’t know, it’s been so busy lately, I just have to keep the priorities on top, and try to find time to take care of as much as I can without handing anything in that I am not feeling. I can’t give stuff in if I don’t feel it, I would rather wait or pass on the opportunity. It’s so important to maintain your sense of the level of work you want to put out. Once it’s out you can’t get it back, so you have to be real sure that it’s your best effort.

In diary format, can you take us through a typical day in the life?

I don’t think there is anything typical in my daily life anymore!

6AM: If it is after a show, I am probably just getting back to the hotel and trying to catch some sleep, unless we are on the first flight out, and then we are heading from a gig to the airpor. 8AM: If I’m not on a plane, I am sleeping. 11AM: Again, if I am not traveling then I’m still sleeping. 2PM: If I am traveling, I hope I have arrived at my destination and my room is ready so I can go back to sleep. 5PM: Most likely just getting up, and planning to go to soundcheck. 8PM: Napping, or out with the promoter and my team for dinner. 11PM: Getting ready to play, going through my set list and just getting a sense of the overall vibe of the night. Then you do it all over again the next day, hopefully to a nice, warm island.

When the Splash House lineup was announced, what’s the best reaction you received from a fan or friend?

Count me in, and can you put me on the guest list.

Playing so many gigs per year, what do you keep in your travel survival bag?

A mud mask, extra USB sticks in case of data loss or computer disaster (this way I still have my music) an eyemask, Bose noise cancelling ear buds, and clean socks and underwear in case your luggage goes missing.

Does that bag include any extra special add-ons for the desert?

Desert add ons: shorts, good deodorant, extra hats and sunglasses.

Any peeks into your Splash House set that you can share with us?

I don’t usually plan my sets so far in advance, but I can tell you that a couple of brand new remixes will be included and I will be testing out my next single, which features A*M*E.

What fellow Splash House artist are you most likely to watch front & center?

Definitely Gorgon City, those guys are friends. RUFUS DU SOL is on the bill with Claptone, I will be looking out for both of them, along with Snakehips, Alex Metric, Juan Mclean, Jesse Rose and many more of my friends who are playing.

The obligatory question of What can we expect from you in the coming months/year ahead?

I am in the process of finalizing the finishing touches on my album, it’s been a long time coming, but I am pretty excited about it.

Anything exciting on the horizon we should know about and share with the universe?

Plans are to concentrate on the states this coming year, I spent a lot of time in Europe recently, so it’s time to bring it home, I am psyched about that.

Bonus question: Describe yourself with three emojis
