Jonny Mendez: Scorpion
If you haven't heard of Jonny Mendez, you owe it to yourself to get familiar. The Chicago based songwriter straddles the fine line of indie, pop, and disco effortlessly. His vocal melodies are ripe with smart vocal licks and pristine vocal runs - and when he gets to that modulated chorus - oh man. Mendez shows off his chops on this one. Lucky for us, his album debuts TODAY, so there's plenty more where this came from. The songwriter dropped us a line to chat with us about how the song came about. Long story short, it was written in a tank of a Toyota in the desert sands. Yeah. We'll let Jonny explain the rest.
“Work took me to Uganda to work on sound and art direction for a documentary for a Global Leadership conference. I bought a small MIDI controller to make some electronic stuff on the road. On the first flight from Chicago to Germany I was messing around with the laptop in some long forgotten folder. I found a session with all these bass parts that I had written. Basically, I started the song chopping up old bass licks and - fast forward a few days - I'm in Uganda. We rented an epic Toyota Landcruiser, practically a tank. It came with a Snorkel, outlets, and all the works in it. After writing the rough instrumental in the desert, I finished the vocals, guitars, and organic elements in Chicago."
Yeah. It's good. Listen on Spotify or stream on Soundcloud below!
