Ready your fingers, readers of KKS. We have a pair of tickets to giveaway to all of you. Well, not all of you. Two of you. Actually, just one of you, but, rest assured, you will be able to bring a guest if you win. Hence, the 'pair' part. Rambling aside, you really should catch this show. Ben Browning of Cut Copy fame is playing a show at The Regent on July 31 and you (+ a friend) won't want to miss it. In honor of the upcoming event, we've interviewed the man himself to glean a bit more knowledge about his solo process and his upcoming plans post tour life.
Email us at stephen@kickkicksnare.com with the subject “Ben Browning Giveaway” in the subject line to enter. We’ll be picking a winner at random on July 22nd. And be sure to peep the interview below.
How did you first get involved in music?
There was a piano in our home when I was kid and at some point I taught myself some chords when i was about 9 or 10. I was hooked from then on. My dad had a lot of Neil Young and Talking Heads that I listened to as a teenager. I'm still in the world really.
What made you decide to pursue a solo project?
I don't write songs in Cut Copy, I contribute more as a musician and collaborator. So doing the solo project gives me an opportunity to write my own stuff which is more satisfying in a way. The guys in the band are pretty encouraging as well when it comes to me working on my solo stuff which is nice.
If you could describe your debut album "Turns" in three words, what would they be?
Wonky Disco Songs.
So awesome that Alex Karpovsky from Girls is in your new video "Friends of Mine!" Can you tell us how he got involved?
I know that was really cool! I'm not entirely sure how it all came about. The director of the video reached out to him and Alex had a spare afternoon so he came along to the shoot. He's a really sweet dude.
What are your plans after this tour?
I haven't thought a lot about that to be honest. Getting the show ready has been my focus for a couple of months. I'm really keen to work on some new tracks and I'll potentially be heading over to Europe for some shows later in the year as well.
What can we most look forward to from your live show?
Hopefully some sweet sounding tunes! I've got a mate over from Australia performing with me as well and we're preparing a kind of hybrid live/electronic show. He's going to bashing drum pads with all kind of weird samples while I'll be holding down the traditional 'singer with electric guitar' position.
