C A T H E D R A L S: Harlem

 

To say that I'm addicted to this track might be a bit of an understatement. This San Francisco duo, comprised of Johnny Hwin and Brodie Jenkins, has somehow created a cut-and-paste collage-esque beauty that features essence of harsh guitar, soft female vocals, hip hop infused claps, and beats I've only heard in trap. I promise this isn't a recipe for disaster- it's a sonic love potion for the ears.

Jenkins' voice is deep, resounding, and pure- a heart pounding richness. I can't decide if I want to belt this in my shower or blast it out my bedroom window (I'll probably do both for the next few weeks.) A revolutionary spin on the genre of pop that builds at just the right moments, crashing down exactly when I need Hwin's release of beats. I feel light and simultaneously independent when listening to this track, something I've actually only felt when walking around Harlem alone in November one fall afternoon.

It's an escape artist's theme tune that carries both power and entertainment, filling my body with anticipation- only thing is I don't want to be released from their grasp anytime soon. I'm heart warmed that this isn't the last we're going to hear of these Bay Area gems.
