June Christy: Hang Them On A Tree
Happy Holidays, y'all. Around this time of year we're all apt to hear Mariah Carey belt her heart out at 1,000,000 BPM and let the synthetic boombastic bom baps of Wham's Last Christmas raise our spirits into a sub-zero dance party. And all these tunes are fine and dandy, (Read: I love them deeply) but buried in the annals of popular song history lies a Christmas album from one of my favorite singers of the last 60 years. She goes by the name of June Christy, and she does things a little differently. While most songbirds choose to wax optimistic about the holiday season, this gal puts a smoky, sarcastic, and somber note on the holidays. Of course - it's brilliant. And - of course - it's criminally underrated. But don't take my word for it, take a listen to Hang Them On A Tree, and then tell me we don't have a brilliant and poignant lyricist on our hands.
