[Best of 2013] Favorite EP: Kahwe - Driving Me Wild

kahweThis was probably the hardest category for me to decide on. There were a ton of great EPs this year, and I found my self flip flopping back and forth between Dauwd, FKJ and others, but I eventually settled on Kahwe's 'Driving Me Wild.' It's the first offering from UK producer John Cowie, released earlier this year on the esteemed Anjunadeep. The EP is three tracks of moody, dark, and melodic house that are slightly deeper than other offerings from the label. Each track is distinct yet united by an old school vibe. “Anything” and the title track are both solid groovers, but the closer, ‘Yew,’ takes a more somber approach, placing percussion and bass as the focus among echoed voices and muted chords. The overall effect feels comfortably familiar and brings the release to a close with hints of a Balearic sunrise. Being only 20, Cowie's maturity of production and overall quality is astounding, and I'm still left wanting to play the ep out nightly.[soundcloud url="https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/3323102" params="color=ff6600&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true" width="100%" height="450" iframe="true" /]
