[BEST OF 2013] Favorite New Artist: Betty Who
2013 has been a year filled with dynamic new music talent. Daring artists are reshaping the world of music and breathing life into a stale pop landscape like never before. But for me there is only one girl in the world, no one else in pop music has captured my ears or my heart like her. When my day has gone all wrong & my head is heavy she makes me feel like I'm high society & living in an endless ballroom dream.
The artist who's carried me away is Betty Who. From the very first note of her smash hit single last spring the Australian-born, Boston-bred, & New York-based Poptress has had me under an intoxicating spell thats left me completely and utterly twitterpated. Her debut EP, The Movement, is the perfect collection of pop music and quite possibly one of the best EP's since Robyn's Body Talk Part 1. The four track collection showcases her vast talent as a thoughtful writer who's able to connect with listeners in a deeply personal way. It's this ability that inspired a fan made proposal video with over 10 million plays and became a worldwide phenomenon and even found Betty Who being played on Ellen.
The massive critical acclaim of her EP & success of her debut single "Somebody Loves You" led to record labels clamoring for her. In September Betty Who signed with RCA Records, joining a family of pop heavyweights like Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Kelly Clarkson. We can expect even bigger things from Betty Who in 2014, with a second EP coming in the spring and a new collaboration with indie-poppers Ghost Beach. So turn your collar up, open the Chardonnay and get ready to be carried away.
