[Video Premiere] Estate + Liquid Pegasus: Tendency

NYC/Minneapolis based Estate and Tokyo’s Liquid Pegasus have teamed up for the first 3-D Gif music video ever for their single, “Tendency.” The video includes three topics of which I’m a huge fan: street photography, gifs, and dance funk.  To my absolute delight they’ve all been combined to make one stunning video.

Using photographs shot entirely in New York, Estate’s Josh Johnson proves that he’s not only someone to watch musically, but artistically, too.  (He even sells his art here)

The process itself seems quite simple, but I’ve learned that if something appears easy it definitely takes a specific expertise and creative license. Johnson shot with a vintage Nimslo camera that takes four frames simultaneously. He then scanned the 35mm negatives, using Photoshop to stack the images on top of one another to create the GIFs- or as I’ve liked to call it “movie magic.”

Johnson’s photographs don’t just create a disjointed story line for the track to move alongside. He renders the people of New York as being a multifaceted and complex- a photo series that not only inspires, but highlights the shear openness that some posses when a camera is held in front of them.

There’s nod to the thin divide that separates strangers from one another that is absolutely breathtaking-I’m all about the honest and raw. This piece of art “blurs the lines between photography and video, bringing the subjects to life in a revolutionary way.”
