[VIDEO + EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] Cass Lowe: Birthmark
Kick Kick Snare would like to introduce you to Cass Lowe, though if you have visited our pages before you are familiar with his work, the multitalented songwriter & producer helped pen Madeon's 'The City', Say Lou Lou's 'Fool Of Me', not to mention he has written and produced for massive stars like the Backstreet Boys, Diana Vickers, & Toddla T.
In his first step into the spotlight Cass Lowe doesn't hold anything back, his debut track, 'Birthmark', is a hauntingly powerful percussion driven ballad that showcases not only his immense skill as a songwriter, but his captivating voice that deftly balances from fragile falsettos and dark baritone growls, to gripping belts with expert ease. Cass is a rarity in the modern pop world, a male pop star who possesses both the immense strength and an emotional depth to lay himself bare before the world.
We had the chance to chat with Cass about the track and its important message. “The song is based around a girl I knew when I was 17 or so, she was the most incredible and intelligent person; super rational, beautiful, & kind, – but she struggled with anorexia and eating disorders, and it became impossible for anyone to comfort her over the noise of negative & self critical voices in her head. The song represents the stress and fear of nearly destroying everything in your life – family, love, health, over body image.”
The Daryl Atkins directed video takes the abstract of this theme of self destruction and applies to a family where each of its members are “jeopardizing and destroying love with their own vices – sloth, bulimia, OCD, indifference, etc. It comes to a breaking point, and then…. hopefully in the way that families do, they work it out, and continue.”
